    Self-Awareness and Self-Care

This presentation is intended to help you become more aware of and comfortable with practicing self-care. Working in the field of education requires focusing on the needs of those being served. Educators must recognize that if they do not care for themselves, they eventually will no longer be able to provide care for their clients/students. Self-care is both a practical necessity and a professional ethical mandate.

Employment related stress is linked to professional burnout and mental and physical health issues.  An educator’s well-being has an influence on educator’s relationships to work and their students.

Wellness-An active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.  Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth.  Wellness is being balanced-physically, intellectually, spiritually and emotionally.  Strategies that focus on promoting wellness, including mental and behavioral health, contributes to a sense of emotional well-being.

Self-Care—any action you can use to improve yourself and your well-being.  Self-care is different from self-indulgence.  Self-care has longer lasting benefits than self-indulgence.  Everyone needs self-care to thrive, it is not selfish, it is necessary.  Have you ever heard the adage, “You can’t take care of anybody else unless you take care of yourself?”  Self-care is an investment, not only in yourself but extends beyond you to those you care for.  Burnout is the result of providing care to others, to the extent that we are no longer taking care of our self.  Research has shown that when we pay attention to our own needs we are more productive, less stressed and more confident.
